Toccoa River Swinging Bridge: A Must-Visit Destination in North Georgia

Located a little less than an hour from Cherry Log, GA, the Toccoa River swinging bridge is a must-visit destination in the North Georgia mountains.  Whether you are looking for an easy family-friendly hike, a great place to camp for a night or some great trout fishing, this iconic landmark has it all. The close proximity to all of the great Cherry Log cabin rentals makes this a very popular day trip for our guests. Here’s what to know before planning your day trip.

A Brief History of the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge

Built in 1977, the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge east of the Mississippi River. It spans the Toccoa River, a crystal-clear stream that is one of the longest cold water rivers in Northern Georgia. The bridge was constructed by the US Forest Service in partnership with the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club to provide a safe and convenient way for visitors to cross the river. Prior to the bridge’s construction, hikers and visitors had to cross the Toccoa River by ford, which could be dangerous, especially during high water levels.

Hiking to the Bridge

The hike to the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge is relatively easy and suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. The parking area and trail head are located down a 3 mile dirt road, accessed by FS 816. Apple or Google maps will get you there, just be on the lookout for the small Forest Service sign for FS816. It will feel like you are lost on the dirt road but just stick with it, the parking area is right at the trailhead. From the trailhead, it is a short well-marked hike down to the bridge itself with trails meandering along the river one both sides of the swinging bridge.

Camping at the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge

Primitive campsites are available first-come, first-serve along the river on either side of the bridge. Popular with thru hikers from the Benton MacKaye Trail as well as casual campers, the sites fill up quickly and no reservations are available so get there early to secure a spot. Weekdays are your best bet for less crowded camping. Remember to pack in and out all of your supplies and leave this beautiful area the way you found it for others to enjoy!

Fishing the Toccoa River at the Swinging Bridge

The Toccoa river provides great trout fishing most times of the year for rainbow trout. The river is mostly clear but can get murky and rise quickly during periods of heavy rain. The section of river by the swinging bridge is best fished while wading on lower water to access the pools around the many boulders in the river. As typical with any public water in North Georgia, the trout do tend to get a lot of pressure from anglers so it pays to hike a little off of the obvious paths to find some less disturbed fish. A 9′ 5 weight rod works great for larger streams like the Toccoa River and hopper-dropper rigs always produce throughout the year. Make sure to get your dropper down to the fish in the deeper pools, especially in warmer conditions. If you aren’t snagging the bottom from time to time, you probably aren’t fishing deep enough to entice these picky fish!

The Toccoa River Swinging Bridge is a truly a must-visit for anyone exploring around Cherry Log, GA and Blue Ridge, GA. Located less than an hour from Cherry Log cabin rentals like our Lazy Laurel cabin, it is a great place to spend the day enjoying the sweet mountain air of North Georgia. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker, a fisherman or looking for a great place to camp, this beautiful natural landmark is sure to impress.
