Lake Blue Ridge – A Great Cherry Log Georgia Day Trip

Cherry Log, GA Day Trip - Lake Blue Ridge

One of the things we love about Cherry Log Georgia is that it provides both a secluded setting but is also a short drive from a lot of activities. One of our favorite day trips is Lake Blue Ridge, which is only about a 20 minute drive from the Lazy Laurel, one of the coziest Cherry Log cabin rentals available in the area.  Lake Blue Ridge is a man-made lake located in Fannin County, Georgia. Created in 1962 by damming the Toccoa River, the lake has become a popular destination for both locals and visitors alike. Since I’m a hoarder of useless knowledge, lets start with some statistics!

Lake Blue Ridge by the Numbers

Lake Blue Ridge spans approximately 3,800 acres and has an average depth of around 30 feet. The deepest point in the lake is about 90 feet. The reservoir has 65 miles of shoreline and only 25 percent of which is developed. The other 75 percent of the surrounding land is located in the Chattahoochee National Forest and the lake is surrounded by the scenic Blue Ridge mountains. The developed portion consists of several boat ramps, a public marina (with a great bar and grill!), some really large beautiful houses and a recreation area with public swimming and picnic areas. So with all of this shoreline, what is there to do you might ask.

Boating and Fishing at Lake Blue Ridge

Rent a boat at the marina or launch your own boat at one of the public ramps. There are a lot of beautiful coves and inlets to explore. Tubing and skiing are popular in the warmer months. Bring along a fishing pole or hire a guide. The lake offers excellent fishing for bass, trout and panfish like crappie. Morganton Point is a great place to launch canoes and paddle boards as well if you want to explore the lake while getting some exercise in.

Hiking and Camping at Lake Blue Ridge

To really appreciate Lake Blue Ridge and the beautiful backdrop of the Blue Ridge mountains, we recommend taking a hike. The lake area is home to two very easy but beautiful trails. The Lake Blue Ridge loop trail is an easy one mile trail through the woods with pretty flat terrain, perfect for families and picnics. Close by is the paved Lake Blue Ridge Campground trail which is a little more than a mile long and a great option for those camping as well as dog owners. Speaking of campground, spend the night in this beautiful area at the Morganton Point Campground. The campground offers 40 beautiful campsites with many of them having a view of the lake. The day use area of the campground offers beach access, snacks and Watersport rentals.

No matter which of the great Cherry Log Cabin rentals you choose to enjoy this gem of a North Georgia town, Lake Blue Ridge is a short drive away and offers a lot of activities for a great day trip. Don’t forget to stop by the marina bar and grill afterwards for some wings and a local beer!
